Philosophy & Curriculum

Education is one of our core pillars.

We offer a modified Montessori Curriculum and the classroom is set up to reflect this.

The entire classroom is always available for the students to explore and the materials and equipment get changed on a monthly basis.

In each classroom, there are Practical Life Shelves, Math Shelves, Science Area, Sensory Tables, Literacy Shelves, Literacy Table, Book Shelf, Art & Sensory Shelf, Building Area and a Dramatic Corner.

There are a variety of activities that are set out on the Practical Life shelves. These activities develop life skills, self care, caring for the environment and fine motor skills. On these shelves you will see the following activities: pouring, transferring, using tongs, sewing, weaving, threading, opening and closing containers, beading, clothes pins, folding, keys and locks, nuts and bolts, dressing frames, whisking, recycle sorting, peg boards, etc.

The Math shelves host a variety of math inspired activities that develop pre math skills such as patterning, matching, sequencing, classification, number order, number recognition, logic and problem solving, measurement, estimation, color recognition, shade recognition, shapes identification, etc. Some activities you can expect to see are number beads, number rods, number spindles, cylinder puzzles, peg puzzles, floor puzzles, sandpaper numbers, number and counters and color tablets.

The Science Area will highlight natural and seasonal items like rocks, sea shells, barnacles, feathers, insects, plants, seeds and life cycles. Children will also get to explore parts of the body, magnetics, outer space, dinosaurs, animals, ocean and our amazing planet!

Children are naturally curious about the world around them. Children will get to experience zoology, human biology, botany, earth science, physical science and geography.

Children learn through their senses. Sensory Tables help develop children’s sense of touch, smell, sound and vision. The Sensory Tables will host a variety of base materials such as rice, sand, beans, corn, potting soil, water, snow or ice. Then enrichment items are added such as spoons, cups, scoops, buckets, animals, gems, rocks, sticks, insects, mini construction vehicles, pinecones, etc.

Developing Literacy skills set children up for success throughout their lives. The Literacy shelves and Literacy Table promote uppercase and lowercase letter recognition, phonics, sight word recognition and identifying rhyming words. Children will get to explore the moveable alphabet, sight word matching, alphabet puzzles, sand tracing, sandpaper letters, alphabet letter bins and rhyming word puzzles. There is also a Book Shelf with a variety of educational books that children can explore.

Art & Sensory activities influence cognition and creative thinking. There is an Art and Sensory shelf where the children can freely use the art materials as well explore sensory materials. Activities and materials that are found on the art shelves are markers, pencil crayons, crayons, water color paint, paper, scissors, glue, stickers, stamps, playdough, magic sand, baking bin, etc.

The Building Area is where young engineers test out their imagination, problem solving skills and knowledge. Building materials that can be found in this area are blocks, lego, duplo, bristol blocks, lincoln logs, tinker toys, wedgits, marble maze and magna-tiles. Children can also explore various types of transportation vehicles such as cars, trucks, buses, emergency vehicles, construction vehicles and trains.

Imagination and pretending create magical moments for young children. Children get to experience this in the Dramatic Corner. This area can be transformed into anything such as a house, puppet theater, farmer’s market, veterinarian clinic, grocery store, ice cream shop, salon or restaurant.

Circle is a time for the teachers and children to come together and do a couple of group activities. Circle always starts with an opening song and then the group will do a variety of the following: sing songs, recite felt board stories, read a book, play gross motor games and play games. Circle also provides opportunities to explore new topics and gives the children a chance to participate in group discussions.

Calendar and Special Helper is a mini circle where children get a chance to discuss the month, days of the week, the current date and the weather. Every class there is a new special helper and the special helper gets to lead the songs, counting and dismissal.

Every day, our teachers will present a Teacher Led Activity at the table, on the carpet or in the playground that children are invited to take part in. These activities are planned and prepped a month in advance. They cover the following curriculum areas: art, fine motor, science and/or math based and often have to do with what is going on around us seasonally.

Outdoor Exploration is a natural extension of the classroom. Mother Nature is an amazing teacher and there are so many beautiful things to discover outdoors. Children will get to build on their gross motor skills while developing a sense of wonder, awareness and self confidence. Teachers will also host games and activities outdoors that will build on children’s abilities to take turns, listen, cooperate and follow rules. We love the neighborhood that we are situated in. During the week, classrooms will go for Neighborhood Walks. We always review safety rules before we head out and use a walking rope for the children to hold onto. One teacher leads the group, while the other teacher is at the end. We stay on sidewalks and cross at crosswalks. Safety is of the utmost importance.

It is just as important to rest and reset our bodies and minds as it is to educate them. The children in the Junior Kindergarten & Toddler program will have a Nap and Quiet Time with natural sounds of the forest, the sea, or the songs of the birds, where they relax their bodies and minds. A cot will be provided for children. Parents are to provide a fitted crib sheet and blanket. Everyone rests on their cot for thirty minutes. For children who do not require a nap, they can get up after thirty minutes and take part in quiet time activities at the table.
